| GWP Regional Water Partnerships
|
These independent regional groups promote the concept and implementation of
integrated water resources management as a vital approach to managing the
world's water resources.
|
|
Water situation today
The region is inhabited by approx 40 million people, of which 66% lives in the Pacific coast,
where only the 30% of the water resources is available. The main problems affecting water management
in Central America are related to the need for sound legal frameworks and to a heavily
centralized and fragmented water governance administration. This region is also affected by the
degradation of water quality, unsustainable use of forests and soils, limited coverage of drinking
water and sanitation and poor understanding about water resources. Even though the size of the
region is small compared to other parts of the world, it is often struck by extreme climate events
like hurricanes or droughts.
In order to reach the Millennium Development Goals related to water, the region needs near
US$ 6.543.227.
Programs and action
The main objective of the partnership is to promote the adoption of Integrated Water Resources
management (IWRM) within its regional jurisdiction through:
- Promoting the exchange of knowledge and experience among policy makers and water
professionals on conceptual and practical aspects related to the application of IWRM.
- Raising awareness among water professionals and journalists through the regional network of
journalists and seminars and workshops.
- Strengthening the governance structures of the network
- Training decision makers and water managers on IWRM principles and practices.
- Facilitating and supporting the elaboration and implementation of regional policy instruments
such as the Central American Strategy on IWRM.
- Participation in the development of regional, national and global water-related events.
- Establishing alliances with different organisations in the region to develop synergies and
improve coordination.
