GWP Regional Water Partnerships
These independent regional groups promote the concept and implementation of integrated water resources management as a vital approach to managing the world's water resources.

Water situation today
South Asia is the most densely populated region in the world, home to nearly a quarter of the world?s population. The region has long been subject to disasters in the form of regular monsoon floods and prolonged drought. South Asia is endowed with vast water resources and has high potential for hydropower development. However, available water is unevenly distributed over space and time.Agriculture is, by far, the dominant water consumer. The demographic growth and economic development in the region vary from country to country. Inadequate supplies of drinking water and sanitation services cause poor environmental sanitation and water related diseases.Water quality and environment is very much degraded. Studies show that the South Asia region, specifically Bangladesh and the Maldives, will be significantly affected by climate change.

The GWP South Asia network formulated the 'South Asia Water Vision 2025' and 'Framework for Action' which was integrated into the 'World Water Vision on Water, Life and Environment 2025' that was prepared for the 2nd World Water Forum in 2000. In 2005, GWP South Asia adopted the mission statement of "Poverty Reduction through IWRM and Partnership Building".
