Water situation today
In December 2001, the Heads of State and Governments of the Economic Community of West
African States (ECOWAS) clearly supported the Regional Action Plan for IWRM and gave instructions for raising funds for its implementation.
They recognized its relevance in poverty alleviation and improvement of its peoples' living conditions. The regional West African Water Partnership is a
privileged forum to meet the challenge and contribute towards the achievement of the West
Africa Water Vision adopted in March 2000.
Programs and action
The West African Water Partnership was established in March 2002 in Bamako, Mali. The
challenges taken up by the Partnership are numerous and include the implementation of
a platform for the effective promotion of the concept of IWRM in the country and regional
water policies. It aims at supporting the creation of new water partnerships and
ensure they function effectively.
Further, the Partnership ensures there is synergy of action with ongoing initiatives such as
the African Ministerial Conference on Water (AMCOW), the Intergovernmental Water
Association (IGWA) and New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), and existing
international conventions.
The West Africa Water Partnership supports the establishment of
capacity building and an information sharing program in the sub-region together with the promotion of the involvement of the youth and children in water resources management.
